Dr.Aki Kawai Dr. Aki Kawai is a native of Tokyo, Japan. She grew up in a family whose guiding principle was to strive for health by eating a well balanced diet and ensuring to get adequate exercise and sleep. During attending Meiji Pharmaceutical University, where she was honored with a scholarship granted by the university, she encountered the world of traditional Chinese medicine, where foods which were commonly used in her diet had been used as medicine for thousands of years.

After graduating from the university in 2001 and practicing as a pharmacist for some time, Dr. Kawai felt that there had to be a more complete model of health and self-healing than the one she had learned. Even though people in her native country of Japan believe in and utilize some alternative medicine, she found these medical approaches were not really practiced in an integrative manner at that time. Her search eventually led her to Canada to seek further knowledge and education in Naturopathic Medicine which combines numerous natural healing modalities.

After graduating from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto, she moved to Edmonton to practice in 2008. She is a member of Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors and Alberta Association of Naturopathic Practitioners. She is also trained and licensed in chelation, advanced IV therapies, medical ozone and oxygen therapies, in-house lab and advanced lab testing. She treats most health concerns with her special interests being in general family practice, women’s health, digestive disorders, and inflammatory disorders.

In her free time, she is engaged in the creation and cooking of nourishing whole foods. She has also been physically active since a young age, participating in tennis, swimming, scuba diving, downhill skiing, hiking, canoeing and yoga. She has recently started to enjoy cross-country skiing in order to take advantage of Edmonton’s abundant snow and ski trails.

Dr. Kawai believes strongly in the healing power of nature and the innate ability of the human organism to heal itself. She sees herself as a facilitator empowering her patients with knowledge and skills, so that they can make healthy choices and maintain long term good health.

In both her personal and professional life, Dr. Kawai strives to follow and embody the 5 principles of Naturopathic Medicine:

First, to do no harm.

To cooperate with the healing power of nature.

To address the fundamental cause of disease.

To heal the whole person through individualized treatment.

To teach the principles of healthy living and preventive medicine.
